Kid Writing

A Systematic Approach to Phonics, Journals, and Writing Workshop

Children are introduced to the world of written language through journal

writing in a writing workshop format. Focuses primarily on teaching phonics

and writing concepts in the context of writing. Students are taught through

teacher models and their own writing. Rather than telling children how to write, support is provided to help sound out words.

Step 2 “Kid-Writing”- child uses stretching process to sound out words

Step 3 “Adult Writing”- child reads his or her writing aloud while teacher

underwrites the correctly spelled words, providing feedback. The adult

Step 4 “Mini-lesson”- teacher chooses a short teaching point.
